Auriculotherapy

The Ultimate for Pain Management and much more…

Auriculotherapy can be effective for many conditions. Some of these include: Back Pain, Headaches, Bursitis, Shoulder Pain, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, TMJ, Dizziness, Vertigo, Hypertension, Asthma, Insomnia, ADD/ ADHD, Shingles, Tinnitus, Neuro-sensory Deafness, Macular Degeneration, Xerostomia, Burns, Psoriasis, Addictions for Nicotine, Drugs, Appetite Control, plus it is very effective for many other difficult patient complaints.

What is Auriculotherapy?

Auriculotherapy is a non-invasive form of electrical stimulation to the external ear for the relief of pain, addictive behaviors, and the support of healing processes throughout the whole body. While the original basis of Auriculotherapy is in ancient Chinese acupuncture, the late Dr. Paul Nogier developed the current methods in France utilizing painless stimulation without needles. In the 1950’s he began to notice that several of his patients had an unusual scar on a specific area of the ear. The patients informed him that the scar was a treatment for sciatica done by a local doctor, which had given them relief within hours or minutes of treatment. After studying this phenomenon, and doing some research, he began mapping other reflex areas in the external ear relating other disorders and complaints. This was the basis for his diligent work to advance this technique to what we know today.

How Does It Work?

It is believed that the ear develops along with each stage of the development of the brain and that there is a direct connection of the skin surface of the external ear with the brain map that corresponds to the different parts of the body. The ear is frequently likened to a computer keyboard with peripheral access to the body’s central microprocessor unit, the brain. By typing in a command on the keyboard (the ear) a signal is sent to the main computer (the brain), the computer then sends a signal to the device (organ, or any other body part) that is governed by the computer. By sending signals to the brain, Auriculotherapy is thought to stimulate healthy signal patterns from the brain to the corresponding area in the body that relates to the area stimulated in the ear. It is believed that these signals are neurochemical in nature and involve endorphins and enkaphalins, which are natural pain killers and relaxers. It is important to understand that by supporting healthy signals, Auriculotherapy facilitates the natural healing processes of the body, not just pain relief.

The Stim Flex

The key to this remarkable effect is a sophisticated electronic instrument called Stim Flex, which allows the practitioner to detect weak areas in the ear. It does this by measuring differences in conductivity in the skin surface of the ear. The weaker an area of the body, the bigger the difference in conductivity the corresponding point of the ear has compared to its immediate surrounding. When the zone has been located it is stimulated with an undetectable micro current. This is a choice form of treatment if the client is concerned about the risk of infection or bleeding associated with the use of needles.

What To Expect

It has been my experience, along with many other Auriculotherapists, that a majority of people experience significant pain relief in the first session. The process is changing brain patterns. Pain may return in areas which are connected to certain old brain patterns which are still prominent. It is therefore important to keep reinforcing the new pattern until it is the primary one and the old pattern of pain is neutralized. Because of this, it is beneficial to have a treatment 2-3 times per week for a few weeks to maximize the treatment response.
